Ram Prices 1500 Rebel Black at $55,540

Ram Canada has announced its latest full-size pickup, the 1500 Rebel Black, will carry an MSRP of $55,540 when it goes on sale in March. The news comes ahead of the truck's debut at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Ram calls the truck a special edition variant of the Rebel, an off-road ready version of the 1500 Crew Cab conceived to compete against Ford's SVT Raptor, at least in appearance. The Raptor is a nearly-$70,000, 450-hp specialized dune runner that stands alone in the pickup segment. The Rebel Black's price includes a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine; the 5.7L Hemi V8 is an option.

Contrary to its Black designation, the new Rebel variant is available in any of the trim's regular colour choices, including silver, white, red and, of course, black. The Rebel Black shares the base model's 33-inch off-road tires and height-adjustable air suspension; setting the Black edition apart are a set of black wheels, brush guard and an available all-black interior with grey stitching in place of the base Rebel's black-and-red cabin.

The Rebel Black's price is a $945 premium over the base Rebel's $54,595 tag -- a reasonable uptick -- but we think the Rebel would be more attractive if the Hemi V8 were standard; that would make the Rebel something closer to a legitimate budget option to the Raptor.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will officially reveal the Rebel Black next week during the 2017 Detroit auto show media preview.
