Mazda's new and rugged-looking CX-50 crossover is set to arrive in Canada in May. The new model will be offered with a choice of naturally aspirated and turbo power, it comes with standard all-wheel drive, and starts from $37,900 (before freight fees).
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is slightly larger than its CX-5 sibling, but two are widely separated in intent. While the CX-5 is aimed at giving drivers on-road handling with some rough-road capability, the CX-50 is meant to flip the script and give better rough-road capability while maintaining some of Mazda's on-road handling.
Four versions of the 2023 Mazda CX-50 will be sold in Canada, starting with the GS-L. That model comes with a 187-hp 2.5L four-cylinder, all-wheel drive, and has a 10.25-inch centre display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a power liftgate. It will also have leatherette heated front seats, a heated wheel, and standard safety features including blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward pedestrian sensing, and radar cruise control.
The CX-50 GT is next, and has a Bose 12-speaker audio system, navigation, and wireless charging. It will also offer a head-up display, 360-view camera, parking sensors front and rear, and leather seats in black or terracotta. Outside, it will have 20-inch wheels and adaptive LED lights. A GT Turbo trim adds Mazda's 256-hp, 320-lb-ft 2.5L turbo-four, as well as a towing mode that gives it up to 3,500 lbs of towing capacity, 1,500 lbs more than the non-turbo trims.
Lastly is a new trim for Mazda, the CX-50 Turbo Meridian that will arrive later in the year. This one will have 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires as well as rocker panel and headlight protection, all in the name of increased off-road capability. It will also wear special hood graphics and Mazda will sell more "outdoor-specific accessories." Pricing for Turbo Meridian will come later in the year.
