Mercedes-Benz kicks off its all-electric era in big style this year with the EQS, a luxury sedan marketed as an EV analog of the full-size S-Class.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
The EQS is an all-new model for 2022, and the brand’s first modern all-electric vehicle.
Available Trims
The EQS lineup starts with the 580 4Matic, while an AMG EQS 4Matic+ boasts more performance. Both use a dual-motor AWD system.
Standard Features
The EQS 580 comes dressed with 20-inch wheels and features power-folding side mirrors, passive keyless entry, LED digital headlights, heated windshield washers, and a hands-free trunk. An air suspension is also standard.
Inside, there are heated/power front seats, leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, dual-zone A/C with pre-conditioning, a heated steering wheel, 12.3-inch driver and front passenger displays, and a 17.7-inch central screen powering navigation, Burmester 3D audio, and wireless smartphone integration. Front-seat occupants get wireless phone charging, and there are six USB charging ports throughout the cabin.
All EQS 580 models come with automatic high beams, attention assist, 360-degree cameras, radar cruise control, front and rear collision mitigation, active/evasive steering assist, blind spot/lane keeping assist, and a lane change assistant.
As of this writing, Mercedes hadn’t published full specs and features for the high-performance AMG EQS.
Key Options
A premium package adds rear-wheel steering, climate comfort front seats with enhanced heating and massage, a head-up display, and four-zone A/C.
Stand-alone options include an augmented reality head-up display, a dashcam, and a heated windshield.
Fuel Economy
Mercedes estimates the EQS’s energy consumption at 2.6/2.4 Le/100 km (city/highway), and promises 547 km of driving range on a full charge.
Competition
The Mercedes-Benz EQS enters an upscale EV segment dominated by the Tesla Model S, the Porsche Taycan, and the Audi E-Tron GT. It also goes up against a newcomer called the Lucid Air.
