Ram’s ProMaster commercial van is FCA’s response to the Ford Transit and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. A North Americanized version of the Fiat Ducato, it’s every bit the purposeful cargo hauler. But while it may look like it’s been cut from the same European cloth as its rivals, it’s a very different beast of burden underneath.
While the ProMaster has the same slab-sided body, and is offered in a broad variety of body lengths and heights, the key difference is that the Ram is front-wheel drive, where as all others are rear- or four-wheel drive. This gives the ProMaster a leg up on the competition in several key areas. The cargo floor is completely flat and offers a low lift-in height making it easy to load and unload cargo. Ram also credits the front-drive configuration for offering the segments’ tightest turning diameter, heaviest payload, and biggest cargo capacity. One upshot is an unusual cabin; the ergonomics and driving position are unconventional.
The ProMaster is available with two different engines, a 280-hp 260 lb-ft of torque 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 or a 3.0-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder that develops 174 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The gas V6 is paired to a six-speed automatic, while the diesel uses a six-speed automated manual. The former is swift on its feet, while the latter boasts great fuel economy. The ProMaster can tow up to 2,313 kg (5,100 lbs), and has a max payload of 2,341 kg (5160 lbs).
While the focus of the ProMaster remains on commercial businesses, 2016 sees the addition of a new passenger van variant. Offered on the 2500 and 3500 with the high roof and 159-inch wheelbase, it’s likely to be a common sight as a hotel or airport shuttle. There’s also a new chrome grille available. Meanwhile, beefed-up electrical supply componentry that includes a second battery and a 20-amp aux switch will allow the ProMaster to better serve those who have converted their chassis cabs to RVs.
Prices for the ProMaster range from $29,995 for the 1500 van with low roof, to $41,995 for the Extended High Roof passenger van.
