2007 Suzuki SWIFT +

For 2007, the Suzuki Swift+ undergoes a few changes. Mechanically, it receives a revised front and rear suspension, and a low-flow steering pump and rack; inside, the CD is now MP3-compatible and has an auxiliary jack, and the automatic transmission shifter changes from a gated pattern to a straight one. The S model receives standard power heated mirrors. Available exterior colours are Bright Red, Tuxedo Black, Misty Blue, Sunset Orange and Silky Silver Metallic.

Available in Canada only, the Swift+ is built by GM-DAT in Korea and is a sister car to the Chevrolet Aveo and Pontiac Wave. The line-up is being completely redesigned, and so the Aveo and Wave sedans are all-new. The Aveo and Wave hatchbacks are carried over, and since Swift+ is only available as a hatchback, it retains the 2006 styling.

The Swift+ uses a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, mated to a five-speed manual transmission that can be optioned to a four-speed automatic for $1,100. Two trim lines are available, the base Swift+ and the Swift+ S.

The base Swift+ includes 14-inch wheels, seat-mounted side airbags, power steering, CD/MP3 player with four speakers, tilt wheel, floor mats, 60/40 folding rear seat, manual exterior mirrors, fixed intermittent wipers, rear wiper/washer, and rear defroster. The only option is air conditioning.

The Swift+ S adds power windows, power locks with keyless entry, air conditioning, CD/MP3 player with six speakers, cruise control, power heated mirrors, mud flaps, body-colour mirrors and exterior handles, fog lamps, rear spoiler and anti-theft alarm.

Although it’s an entry-level vehicle, the Swift+ feels like a peppy little performer, and thanks to extra sound-deadening material, it’s surprisingly quiet for an economy vehicle. Side airbags are appreciated, but it would be nice to have anti-lock brakes, even as an option, especially since so many competitors also offer them. Expect a makeover to make this inexpensive little runabout even better.
