Snow Beast!
This car is amazing in the snow mated with the 5-spd manual transmission. Fun to drive, space to haul all kinds of stuff, decent on fuel. Great car and would buy it again in a heartbeat.

Excellent mechanically, poor cabin design
As personal physical limitations increased (arthritis) interior access became much more difficult. Ultra low emissions in PZEV model.

2001 Subaru Outback

Dependable ride!
Excellent, reliable all-season commuter. Never failed me in 14 years and is still going strong! With Subaru AWD I never had to worry about snowstorms or any other adverse weather conditions - I knew my Subaru would be able to get me to the office in the morning no matter what! With plenty of interior and cargo space the vehicle covered all of my family transportation needs - be it a daily commute to the office, a ski trip, grocery shopping or a move from one house to another, our Subaru Outback could accommodate it all perfectly.

A car that will do just about anything you ask of it.
This is a car to love. Handles well, rides very comfortably, excellent in winter conditions. You can pack alot into this car, whether thats gear or kids or pets, and still feel quite spacious. I find this car more versatile than my husbands truck because I can do so much more with it. By putting down the seats, I have even hauled lumber successfully. Biking, camping, building or just a drive out the lake, this car has been a great friend.

Subaru Outback really has maintianed its value.
Great car. Stylish look. Excellent Fuel economy. Has good power with the innovative boxer engine configuration. Heated seats are an excellent feature for our cold Canadian winters. Sun roof always a nice feature to have. Towing package supports the ability to tow boats in excess of 2500 lbs very easily. Satellite radio makes those long highway drives a breeze.

Best Subaru in Canada
This is a beautiful and totally reliable car to drive. It's essentially a new car. Always garaged and serviced on time. The gas mileage is amazing and gives up to 40 miles per gallon on the hwy.

All wheel drive that has always gotten me there
Having owned this car for over 10 years I can honestly say it has never left me stranded or put in in danger. Rain, Snow, Sleet or whatever else mother nature can throw at it, it does an amazing job of keeping on the road and getting you there safely. It does give up a bit on fuel economy because of the all wheel drive all the time but the safety is worth it IMHO.

The car has an amazing upgraded Alpine stereo with handsfree bluetooth. That was really the only thing this car needed to have it all. Iphone connects nicely and all calls are clear and easy. After loving this Subaru for over 10 years it is no surprise that I bought another one. Great experience and such a smooth comfortable ride even for a bigger person.

Great winter driver
This was my first car. It was a great vehicle in both summer and winter. Never had an issue getting stuck in the snow! The only issues I had were with the brakes and exhaust. All of which were dealt with. Plastic bug deflector and rear plastic spoiler damaged by the ice storm this winter. Clutch will need replacing sooner rather than later but otherwise in great working condition!

carries stuff like a work horse and rides like a thoroughbred
very reliable. great ride. and all round vehicle for an active person who wants to carry lots of stuff. Rear seats fold down for a large luggage area. Reasonable mileage. Never let me down in almost 300,000 kms. A very good clearance that lets me get into cottage roads and off road on my farm.

Has been my third Subaru, each one better than the next
These cars are built to last. The 3.0R is a joy to drive, as it has lots of power matched with firm handling allowing you to forget that it is a wagon once behind the wheel. The interior trim is very well laid and thought out. The VDC outback is by far the best Subaru I have owned to date.

Very reliable and a tank in the snow
Driven 144,000km before the first repair and even that was just a torn axle boot. Other than wear and tear items like brakes and tires, that's it. Been spectacular in the snow. Corners like its on rails. Pretty peppy for just a 4cyl engine. Have pulled a 1600lb trailer for six years with no problems at all.

3 engines later
Had subaru replace the first engine under warranty at 90,000kms. At 180,000kms blew a head gasket which cost $4,000 in repairs...This has not been a reliable car at all....which goes against all reviews and which was the reason why I purchased it to begin with...on the positive side, the AWD was indeed exceptional.

Reliable winter driver
Although it isn't the quickest or best looking car in the world, the Outback is highly capable. In the winter, when equipped with appropriate tires, no amount of snow or ice is an obstacle. Despite it's age, it started in the coldest days without any issues. The interior is dated, but functional. It has cost us very little in running costs and maintenance.

If you're looking for a reliable car that will haul just about anything from your kids to full-size shaker doors, and get you to the ski hill, look no further.

Eats the gas
It just does - and the automatic transmission doesn't seem to be terribly efficient either.

I liked the wagon styling, it looks great inside and out. It looks more like a large semi-upscale sedan on the inside than a truck, and I quite like that.

However it drives and eats gas like a truck too. Mind you in the snow that is great, it was unstoppable here in our Ottawa winters.

I think bottom line is that if you like the styling and need AWD this car is a no-brainer, get it. But I only need AWD maybe 4 days a year, so I'm selling and moving on to something a little more nimble and fuel frugal.

Bland, bland, bland
My Outback just clicked over 80,000 Km (that's 50,000 Miles for those of you living stateside). While the car's AWD system has proven very capable in winter conditions, I can think of no other reason to recommend this vehicle.

It's been reasonably reliable. At 70,000 Km it had to be towed to the dealer because the coil failed. The dealer was VERY familiar with this problem, which apparently afflicts many Subarus of this vintage. Go figure. That's been it's only break-down. But my main issue with the car is its ancient 4-speed automatic, which (thankfully) you won't find in the newer models. It's just plain awful, and ruins the enjoyment of an otherwise pleasant vehicle.

Overall, the car is competent and probably durable. But it is bland, bland, bland.

One of the safest vehicles on the road.
I love this car so much I bought another one. Nothing beats Subaru's all wheel drive system. You get full control without losing good gas mileage. The comfort is great, there are no blind spots, and it is a pleasure to drive. It has a great safety rating. If my Mom was going to buy a car, I'd make sure she researched the Outback. You won't be sorry.
